Adopted Objects: Introduction

Historical Background

The Recovered Territories, also referred to as the Western and Northern Territories, are the former eastern territories of Germany that became part of Poland after World War II. The majority of their German inhabitants were forcibly deported and the territories were resettled by Poles displaced by the Soviet annexation of Poland’s Eastern Borderlands and by migrants from other parts of Poland. Alongside Gdańsk (Free City of Danzig), Wrocław (Breslau) in Lower Silesia and Szczecin (Stettin) in Western Pomerania were the biggest cities in the Recovered Territories.
