The exhibition presents several dozen photographs showing the city of Kharkiv before the war and after the armed conflict began. The photographs were taken by Vasyliy Holosnyy, a graphic artist and photographer, who since February 2022 has been documenting the destruction of the city and the crimes perpetrated by the Russian army.
“I was convinced that in the 21st century a war fought on such a vast scale was simply not possible in Ukraine. I thought so up till the morning of 24 February 2022”, said the curator of the exhibition and a resident of Kharkiv, Kostyantyn Ishchenko. “Waking up at 4.30 am and hearing explosions all over the city, I found it difficult to believe that Russian fighter planes are bombing Kharkiv, dropping half-tonne bombs, and the S300 rockets arriving daily, destroy civilian infrastructure, residential housing, universities, schools, kindergartens, factories […].
The purpose of the exhibition project ‘Kharkiv 2022. Traces of the War’ is to demonstrate, using as examples the same locations, the way our city has changed during this war”.
The exhibition opens on 17 September – the anniversary of the 1939 Soviet invasion of Poland.
Vasyliy Holosnyy – photographer and graphic artist, specialises in documentary and landscape photography. A resident of Kharkiv, he has documented the crimes perpetrated by the Russian army since the beginning of the war, for which he received an honorary award from the Mayor of Kharkiv.
Kostyantyn Ishchenko – graduate of Kharkiv State University, an organiser of exhibitions, trade fairs and sports events. During the last five years has been working for Kharkiv City Council, realising projects aimed at shaping and strengthening the positive image of the city, as well as supporting its creative community.

Я думав, у 21 столітті така масштабна війна просто не може статися в Україні. Так мені здавалося до раннього ранку 24 лютого 2022 року. О 4:30 прокинувшись від вибухів у місті, важко було повірити в те, що Харків бомбитимуть російські винищувачі, скидаючи напівтонні бомби, щодня прилітатимуть ракети С300 і знищуватимуть цивільну інфраструктуру, житлові будинки, університети, школи, дитячі садки, заводи та навіть станції технічного обслуговування.
Найбільше постраждав спальний район Північна Салтівка. За розміром та кількістю мешканців цей район більший за середнє українське місто з населенням близько 200 000. Тепер він знищений практично повністю.
Під час війни ми, жителі Харкова, усвідомили, яким гарним було наше місто і як зручно було в ньому жити. У пам’яті збереглася одна картинка, а зараз, коли я пересуваюсь містом, неможливо спокійно дивитися на руйнування, які принесли нам російські загарбники.
Проєкт «Харків 2022. Сліди війни» показує на прикладі одних і тих самих локацій, як змінилося моє рідне місто під час війни 2022 року.
