Iron World

The Craft of the Locksmith: Locks, Keys, Padlocks, Iron Strongboxes…
Artefacts from the Collection of the National Museum in Wrocław

5 July – 30 December 2022

Curator of the exhibition: Tadeusz Fercowicz

The late Gothic keys from St Mary Magdalene, a lock key from the times of the Vikings, a padlock and doorhandle made in the workshop of Jaroslav Vonka, are only some of the artefacts showcased in this exhibition.

The exhibits comprise door locks, keys, padlocks, metal fittings such as door knockers, hinges and chests made between the 9th and the 20th cent. For the first time, visitors will be able to see unique iron strongboxes, among them a rare 17th century iron barrel-shaped box made to holdsoldiers’ pay. The range of displayed artefacts is also complemented by metal fittings originating from Wrocław town houses such as keyhole plates, and door handles dating from the late 19th and early 20th cent., which today have almost vanished from the city landscape.
